Getting Started

Choosing a Custom Framer
How do you choose a custom framer? Think about how you would choose a new dentist or someone to care for your pet. Look for experience, ask for referrals from friends, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. How long have they been framing? How did they learn the trade? What are their professional affiliations and certifications, and are they insured? Beware of the business that advertises “the lowest price guaranteed.” Be sure that you click with their personality, as the design process should be an interactive experience. Look for a person that inspires both creativity and trust, and then have fun!
What's in a name…
One way to narrow down the field is to ask for a Certified Picture Framer (CPF). A CPF is a professional with the experience and knowledge necessary to properly handle all of your custom framing projects. Dedicated to staying abreast of changes in the technical art of custom framing, a CPF can make informed recommendations for protecting and preserving your artwork and valuable items.
You can be sure that an individual with a CPF designation after their name is actively involved in picture framing and has passed a comprehensive written examination covering the latest materials, techniques and design theories. In order to maintain the CPF designation, individuals must take continuing education classes and be recertified every four years. Certification is awarded by the Professional Picture Framers Association.
